Visit the Buddhist site and ruins of Sarnath, where Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment.
Sarnath monastery is an important centre for Buddhists pilgrims, as the Buddha came to Sarnath to give his first message once he had achieved enlightenment. Because of this, Ashoka, the great Buddhist Emperor, erected magnificent stupas and monasteries here in the 3rd century BC, and by 640 AD it had more than 1500 priests. Since then, however, Sarnath has been reduced to ruins. In 1836 British archaeologists started excavations on the site.
