Purmamarca: Llama Trekking Salinas Grandes
Learn about the Pozo Colorado heritage and enjoy fantastic landscapes, accompanied by the Jujuy Province's famous inhabitant - the Llama.
This tour starts in Pozo Colorado, a beautiful small village located to the east of the Salinas Grandes. You’ll learn about their heritage as well as taking part in a trek alongside the most famous animal in the Jujuy Province – the llama.
The 200 native inhabitants of Pozo Colorado base their production in extracting salt and breeding the llama. This community is currently working to recover its cultural heritage, which includes spinning and weaving llama wool, carving stones, manufacturing salt and, as of recently, using the llama as a pack animal. As you head towards Pozo Colorado, you’ll enjoy the spectacular landscape of the ‘Cuesta de Lipán’, observing vicunas and guancos (both also part of the llama family). On arrival, you’ll prepare the llamas for the expedition and begin a trek that will last around 1.5 hours as you explore the vast expanse of the salt flats. After a well-deserved rest and lunch, you will return to the community.
