Prison Island visit
Prison Island lies just off the coast of Stone Town, and was one where rebellious slaves were exiled to. Today it is home to endangered Aldabra giant tortoises with a small beach and reef for snorkelling - a half day here will allow you to explore.
Prison Island, once a prison for slaves and a quarantine station for Zanzibar, the island is now home to Zanzibar's Giant Aldabran Tortoise colony that were imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. Some tortoises are over 100 years old and are now an endangered species.
On the island you have the opportunity to feed and pet the tortoises and also see a wide variety of birds, colourful peacocks, bats, and beautiful butterflies.
The island is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkelling along with a beautiful white sandy beach for sunbathing and relaxing on.
