As an insight into Bhutan’s wealth of culture, religion and history, the Paro Tshechu is a revered event that culminates in the unfurling of a vast silk Thangka, considered to be one of the most sacred blessings in the country.
Joining the pilgrims, worshippers and visitors at the vibrant Paro Tshechu, you’ll catch a glimpse of a country that retains an intense pride in its history and cultural heritage. Flawlessly executed mask dances demonstrate the years of dedication and practice taken by the monks, with their artfully nuanced performances believed to invoke the deities. Silk brocades and fearsome masks create a captivating scene, and perfectly capture the rich traditions of art, dance, textiles and crafts that remain strong in Bhutan. Held in the courtyard of the Paro Dzong, the festival brings the community together, with flamboyant and ostentatious dress and convivial socialising part of the tradition. The highlight of the Tshechu must be the unfurling of an enormous silk Thangka, so vast that it covers an entire building.
