Nikko National Park
Just outside of Tokyo, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to national cultural treasures and fine gardens that transcend important periods of Japanese history. This full-day tour will introduce you to these in a beautiful forest setting.
Early this morning, you will be met at your hotel by your guide who will help you make the 2 hour journey to Nikko on the Japanese public transport network.
Set in a beautiful setting of lakes, valleys and mountains, the area around Nikko National Park has been an important centre for Bhuddist and Shinto worship for centuries. Today, one of its highlights is the extravagantly adorned Toshogu Shrine, dating back to the 1600s. The shrine complex includes five structures and two swords, which are listed as National Treasures of Japan and your guide will help you understand the history behind them and the culture of Japan at this time through stories and legends.
You will also visit the Tamozawa Imperial Villa, former home to the Nikko Royal Family. The residence has an interesting history, originally being situated in Tokyo and moved out to Nikko to form a summer retreat. Today it stands restored and offers an interesting blend of Edo and more modern Meiji styles as well as western influences and its beautifully manicured gardens are worth a visit in their own right.
Nikko National Park is a large area and has several other points of interest from walking trails to botanical gardens. Your guide will escort you back to Tokyo after seeing Tamozawa Villa, but if there is time and you would prefer to stay on, your guide will be happy to leave you with instructions of what to see and how to return to your hotel.
