Morning in Yangon: Monks, Markets & Mohinga
Immerse yourself in local daily life on this morning tour of Yangon, taking you to hidden markets, to join pilgrims at Shwedagon Pagoda and enjoy a traditional Burmese breakfast of Mohinga in a local tea shop.
With your guide, travel to Shwedagon Pagoda, Burma's most revered religious site. Although busy throughout the day, it is particularly busy with in the morning with local pilgrims, nuns and monks coming to pay their respects. Stroll around the large temple complex, and gaze up at the glittering main stupa whilst you learn about Burmese beliefs and the role Buddhism plays in the daily life of the locals. As you leave Shwedagon Pagoda, browse the shops at the base of the temple selling a variety of religious items.
Next, turn down a hidden alleyway to discover a bustling market amongst the maze of alleys selling a variety of fresh produce and dry goods. Continue to a local open-air tea shop, bustling with locals who come to socialise or conduct business. Try a cup of local sweet tea, or some coffee, alongside some Mohinga, a traditional Burmese breakfast noodle dish. There are also a variety of other dishes on offer, including cakes, chappati-style break and some savoury pastries.
