Madurai evening temple ceremony
Visit this stunningly decorated temple for the evening 'going to bed' ceremony.
The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s consort Parvati, who is known here as Meenakshi. The temple complex sits in a high-walled enclosure, in the middle of which lie two sanctums surrounded by a number of small shrines and pillared halls. An especially impressive aspect of the Meenakshi Temple are the 12 gopurams, which are large pyramid shaped towers. The towers rise from granite bases and covered in figures of deities, mythical animals and monsters painted in vivid colours. Each evening the temple holds a ‘going to bed’ ceremony. This wonderfully unique ceremony is carried out by a number of priests and creates a fascinating spectacle! The priests bring the statue of Meenakshi across the temple to spend the night by his wife’s side.
