Maboneng & Newtown Tour
This five hour tour of downtown Newtown, Johannesburg's creative and cultural hub, and Maboneng, an urban regeneration success story, takes you on some of the cultural highlights of the city.
You will be picked up from your hotel and the tour will take you first to Newtown, situated in the heart of downtown Johannesburg. This is part of the city's creative and cultural hub, developing from the early 20th century with the expansion of the city's railway, Newtown became the epicentre of commerce with banks, brick companies, fisheries and breweries establishing businesses. The area was targeted with some of the first forced removals during apartheid years due to its multiracial diversity, and landmarks such as the Market Theatre was regarded as the 'Theatre of the Struggle.' Other attractions in Newtown include Southern African's largest science centre, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Museum Africa and popular night-time Jazz venue, Bassline.
The second part of the tour lies to the east of the city in Maboneng, an urban regeneration story meaning 'Place of light', home to several independent retail, restaurants, offices, film studios and creative factory spaces. Visit Arts on Main on a Sunday for a snapshot of the local lifestyle, delicious food and interesting design market. This tour is perfect for theatre, music and culture lovers who want to find more about Johannesburg's arts scene.
