Kyoto Gardens Tour
Japan is a paradise for those with green fingers, and Kyoto brings together some of the finest gardens in the country. Strolling gardens, zen rock gardens, ponds and lakes are all features you will see on this full day tour.
This morning you will be met at your hotel by an expert local guide who will escort you on Kyoto’s public transport system to four of the city’s horticultural masterpieces. You first stop will be Ryoanji Zen Temple. This is the site of Japan’s most legendary rock garden, dating back to the 15th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The garden is considered a masterpiece of Japanese art and your guide will help you interpret its meanings, symbolism and history.
You will next visit a more traditional strolling garden. Carefully designed to be usable in all seasons with careful attention paid to the routes, these gardens were popular in the 18th century to create an outdoor experience when travel between areas of the country was limited. The example at Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion is an excellent example of this.
Your guide will next take you to Nijo Castle and its Ninomaru Garden, designed by master Kibori Enshu and finally the much larger Imperial Palace Gardens, which features broad avenues and public spaces popular with modern-day Kyotites. After experiencing the Palace Gardens, your guide will escort you back to your hotel using public transport.
