Kumartuli’s Potter Community
A visit to the Kumartuli potter community is a fascinating tour where you can witness the incredible skill with which clay model of gods and animals are created and painted.
Kumartuli is a traditional potter’s quarter in Northern Kolkata (originally known as Calcutta). This neighbourhood is responsible for supplying clay idols of Hundi gods for local use and a great number are also exported across the rest of India and the world. The area is home to more than six hundred potter families and consists of a maze of alleyways where potters sit on the street and carry out their work. You will get to see how the models of the gods are skilfully created and understand more about the way the potters live. The piles of discarded clay heads, the many armed gods and the exquisitely painted tigers and elephants create excellent photography opportunities.
