Kamakura Day Tour
Just an hour from Tokyo lies one of Japan’s former political centres. Often compared to Kyoto, Kamakura thrived until the 14th Century and is now home to a wealth of historical highlights which you will visit on this full-day tour.
This morning, you will be met at your hotel by your expert guide who will help you make the hour-long journey to Kamakura on the public transport network.
As the seat of the Shogunate, Kamakura has its own distinct period in Japanese history from 1185-1333 and was one of the most populated cities on earth. While those days are well and truly in the past, the city has left behind many treasures which have been beautifully restored and preserved.
Your guide will walk you through the history of the city, starting with the Great Buddha of Kamakura at the impressive Kotokuin Temple. Constructed in 1252 the Buddha is the second tallest in Japan at over 13 metres and is a classic example of a bronze Amida Buddha.
Another highlight is the Hase-dera Temple which is also home to an impressive sculpture, this time the statue of Kannon, the Jodo goddess of mercy which is one of the largest wooden sculptures in Japan. The temple itself has fine views down to the town of Kamakura itself and your guide can walk you around its beautifully manicured gardens which is adorned with small sculptures and idols.
The city’s most important shrine is Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, dating from 1180 and one of the largest Shinto shrines in the region. Your guide will walk you through the extravagant approach which passes under several impressive Torii gates before entering the shrine itself, where you will be shown the correct rituals to enter the shrine, which will come in handy throughout your journey through Japan.
After seeing the various shrines and temples, you may wish to end the day with a spot of shopping for local delicacies in the city’s Komachi Street before being escorted back to Tokyo by your guide.
