Hiking Mount Takao
Less than an hour from Tokyo, the sacred mountain of Takaosan offers a network of beautiful walking trails. Your guide will help lead you to the 599 metre high summit, which can offer spectacular views over Tokyo and Mt Fuji.
This morning, your guide will meet you at your hotel and together you will travel to the small city of Hachioji, around an hour from Tokyo on the public transport network. Here you will see the city disappear as dense woodland takes over, forming the slopes of Mount Takao. Considered a sacred mountain, Takao has featured in Japanese folklore and been a centre of worship for over a thousand years. Today it offers a wilderness retreat in easy reach of Tokyo and some fine walking options in stunning scenery.
There are eight well-marked trails that lead up the mountain, ranging from wide stone paths to more rugged nature-focused tracks. Each of them winds through forests of beech and cedar trees dotted with wildflowers and on the more popular routes, stone carvings can be found tracing back to the historic ceremonies held on the mountain.
A walk to the summit usually takes around two hours, where you are rewarded with a beautiful view over Tokyo city, and on clear days Mount Fuji and even as far as Yokohama. The summit is also home to a small temple where you can join in with prayers to the mountain Gods for good fortune.
For the less energetic, there is a cable car service that operates up to around the halfway point of the mountain, whilst at the bottom a hot spring bath can offer relief after the walk. After your time at the mountain, your guide will then accompany you back to Tokyo and your hotel.
