Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery
Perhaps one of the most famous images of Bhutan is that of Tiger’s Nest, the colourful temple clinging precariously to a sheer cliff face 900 metres above the Paro valley. Reached by 2-3 hour trek, this sacred site more than lives up to its reputation.
After a hearty breakfast, set out early, in order to avoid the hot sun and crowds, for a two to three hour up-hill trek to Tiger's Nest. Also known as Taktsang Lhakhang, this extraordinary temple perches on a cliff face high above the Paro valley and accessible only by a trek through picturesque countryside and pine forests dappled with sunlight. Dating back to 1692, legend has it that the temple was built on the site of a cave where the 7th century Guru Rinpoche defeated the resident demons by meditating for 3 years, 3 months and 3 days, having flown up on the back of a tigress.
The path snakes upwards through the mountainside as you pass between monasteries and temples before first reaching the gardens of Zangtoperlri (Heaven on Earth). For those that are brave from here you can peer over the edge and look straight down onto the ornate roofs of the Taktsang which hang on the cliffs below. An hour later you will reach the ornate gates of the temple decorated with murals, passing a waterfall before finally entering Tiger's Nest.
