Golden Statue of Buddha Dordenma
Set on top of a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, the Buddha Dordenma is a Buddhist site of extraordinary artistic achievement, its 125,000 gilded statues of the Buddha rivalled only by the views over the Thimphu Valley.
Part of an ancient prophecy that dates back to the 8th century, the Buddha Dordenma was built to promote an aura of peace and happiness across the world and strolling around the vast golden Buddha certainly brings a sense of tranquillity and calm. At 51.5m tall, the vast Shakyamuni is one of the largest statues of the Buddha in the world, a gilded bronze icon containing 125,000 smaller statues of Buddha. Also cast in bronze and gilded, the 8 and 12-inch tall statues actually outnumber the population of Thimphu.
