Galle Fort Walking Tour
Walk along the ramparts and through the ancient streets of Galle Fort, founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Galle is rich with merchant history and colonial charm.
Galle was founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century and in 1598 they built a small fort which was later extended. When the Dutch took over in 1640, they destroyed everything the Portuguese had built and constructed the 36-hectare fort in 1663, which today is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Galle is South East Asia’s best example of a fortified city built by Europeans and is an excellent demonstration of the mixture of European architecture and Asian traditions.
