Full Day Naoshima Excursion from Hiroshima
An experience that contemporary art and architecture enthusiasts should consider, visiting Naoshima Island to explore the Art House Project, Chichu Art Museum and Benesse House Museum, with two exciting journeys on the bullet train.
This artistic experience begins as you and your guide travel to Uno Port from Hiroshima on the bullet train, which takes one and a half hours. From Uno you will catch the ferry to Naoshima to spend the day exploring the island. Your guide will take you to Honmura, a small port town on the island’s eastern coast and home to the Art House Project. This is a collection of abandoned houses, workshops, a shrine and a temple, which have been transformed into art installations and buildings to house modern art. Carried out by various artists and architects from Japan and abroad, these ‘art houses’ are scattered through the town, but blend seamlessly into the surrounding Japanese neighbourhood, which is charmingly traditional. The interiors, however, have been given to the artists to reflect their artistic vision.
You will also visit the Chichu Art Museum, which is a unique modern museum set in the hillside overlooking the island’s southern coast. The building was designed by Ando Tadao and is mostly located underground, using only natural light to illuminate the artwork. You will also visit Benesse House Museum, a hotel and museum combining contemporary art and guest rooms within the same space. The day will end as you get back on the ferry to Uno before taking the bullet train back to Hiroshima.
