Full Day Mandalay City Tour
Spend with day with a local guide exploring the city of Mandalay, visiting sights including the gilded Mahamuni Pagoda, some traditional workshops and Burma’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site before ascending Mandalay Hill in time for sunset.
The first stop is the Mahamuni Pagoda, home to one of Burma’s most revered Buddha images. This striking statue has been adorned with so much gold leaf by devotees over the years it has developed a signature bumpy texture. After spending some time admiring this Buddha image and walking around the temple grounds, you will travel to a number of Mandalay’s small workshops. A city well known for its skill craftsmen, explore these traditional workshops, discover the role of cottage industries in the city and see the product of gold leaf and woodcarvings.
In the afternoon, the tour continues with a visit to the Kuthodaw Pagoda, whose 729 stone slabs of Buddhist scriptures has led to its recognition as home to the world’s ‘largest book’ and Shwenandaw Monastery, the last remaining building of Mandalay’s 19th Century royal palace, known for its exquisite woodcarvings.
The tour draws to a close with a visit to the top of Mandalay Hill in time for sunset. The city’s highest view point, the hill offers fantastic views over the city and Irrawaddy River, a sight even more magical at sunset.
