While Watamu's beaches are the big draw card, the surrounding area offers plenty to do and see. Discover the mangrove forests in the Mida Creek reserve, explore the ancient Gede Ruins or head in land to Tsavo National park for a safari experience.
Take a dhow and sail to Mida Creek, a reserve rich in mangrove forests, warm shallow waters and excellent bird life including flamingos, malachite kingfisher and crab plover to name a few. The creek is a popular fishing spot for local fishermen and offers guests a glimpse into daily life as they pass by in their dug out canoes. Discover the ancient Gede Ruins, once on of the Arab towns dotted along the coast, dating back to the 13th century but abandoned for the last 400 years. The area has been excavated to uncover the Great Mosque, Palace and tombs. This is a great excursion for those interested in the Swahili history and culture. For those yet to take in time on safari. Tsavo National park is located a two hour drive away and offers the chance to see big game including lion, elephant and buffalo and plenty of plains game too.
