Dating back as far as AD 500, the underground tombs of Tierradentro form part of a captivating site with a history that remains largely unknown. Spend a full day trying to unearth the mysteries of this civilisation as you explore the elaborate remains.
The UNESCO World Heritage listed Tierradentro lies surrounded by lush foliage and breathtaking mountain scenery that add to the beauty of this archaeological site. With a guide you’ll visit the network of subterranean tombs of Alto de San Andrés, Alto del Aguacate, Alto de Segovia, Alto del Duende and El Tablón. Intricately decorated with geometric and anthropomorphic details, these tombs offer tantilisingly little in the way of information about their inhabitants, the members of an indigenous group who left no written records. Be that as it may, this is a fascinating, somewhat mystical site and the Archaeological and Anthropological museums shed some light on the history of Tierradentro. The nearby pre-Columbian village of San Andrés de Pisimbalá is a quaint, laidback spot to explore, and the Casa del Cabildo offers a chance to learn more about the history, and political and economic breakdown of the local Paeces community.
