Excursion to Chettinad Region
An excursion to the Chettinad Region to explore stunning abandoned mansions.
Chettinad is the homeland of the famous Tamil traders ‘Chettiars’, a prosperous banking and business community, many of whose members migrated to various part of South-east Asia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today the area is well known for its mansions, embellished with marble and Burma teak, wide courtyards, spacious rooms. Local legend explains that the mansions’ walls were polished with egg whites to give them a smooth gleaming texture. Today, all these beautiful mansions are vacant, although they are still maintained by the Chettiars living all over the world. Walking around a typical Chettinad village and exploring these fascinating abandoned mansions is an exquisite experience. Whilst exploring the region you will also be taken to visit local tile makers, weavers and other arts/crafts practitioners.
