Discover Mandalay and Mingun
Discover the best of Mandalay and Mingun on this full day excursion, taking in historic sites, awe-inspiring buildings and some beautiful scenery.
The tour begins in the former royal capital of Mandalay with an ascent up Mandalay Hill. At 240 metres, the hill is the city's highest vantage point, offering fantastic views over the surrounding countryside, Irrawaddy River and the city centre. At its base lies the Shwenandaw Monastery known for its intricate wood carvings and the Kyauktawgyi Pagoda, home to a grand marble Buddha. Also make a visit to the nearby Kuthodaw Pagoda, Burma's first UNESCO Heritage Site consisting over more than 700 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings, earning its title of the 'world's largest book'.
After lunch at a local riverside restaurant, enjoy a short boat trip up the Irrawaddy River to Mingun, a picturesque riverside village home to many interesting sites. the first visit will be to the Mingun Bell, the world's largest un-cracked bell weighing in at a large 87 tonnes. Just south of the bell is the Mingun Pagoda, an impressive brick structure thought to have been constructed in the 1700s. Before returning to Mandalay, there is also plenty of time to visit small neighbourhoods, interact with locals, explore markets and visit the Hsinbyume Pagoda, a white-washed temple built to resemble Mount Meru.
