Day 2 - Nakasendo Highway (Tsumago to Nojiri)
Today's trek is beautiful and varied and includes a hike from Tsumago to Nojiri. The trail traces small valleys and moves into forests, often bamboo or cedar. Some of this is the least developed scenery on the trail.
Today's hike heads from Tsumago to Nojiri before catching the train onto Kiso Fukishima where you will spend the night. You will trek through bamboo and cedar forests, through villages and past small agricultural plots. Once you arrive in Nojiri you will catch your train to Kiso Fukishim and here will be a complimentary transfer to your ryokan, home to a lovely indoor steamy onsen. If you choose to trek the longer route it will be 18.4km and you will take approximately 6 hours. The shorter route takes approximately 1 hour, giving you more time to relax.
In Kiso Fukishima, you can also do an optional circular walk to a local waterfall. This steep walk is approximately 7km and is designed for seasoned walkers.
Please note there is also the alternative for a shorter route today, stopping at Nagiso instead of Nojiri and catching the train from there to Kiso Fukushima. You can make that decision on the day and specific information will be supplied in your documents.
