Day 1 - Nakasendo Highway (Magome to Tsmago)
Your first day trekking along the Nakasendo Highway, an old postal route between Tokyo and Kyoto. Firstly arrive in Nakatsugawa before catching a local buy to Magome. From here trek one of the most beautiful routes of the Nakasendo, from Magome to Tsmago.
Begin your self guided journey along The Nakesendo Highway, one of Japan's most scenic treks that follows an ancient postal route between Kyoto and Tokyo, then known as Edo. Dotted with tiny feudal towns and villages, tracks of forest as well as small farms and paddy fields, this is often a highlight for visitors that want to escape the crowds to explore rural Japan.
You will first arrive into Nakatsugawa by train, and from here you'll catch a local bus to Magome, a beautiful postal town where your trek begins. Provided are fantastic detailed documents for your self guided trek, along with maps, your train tickets and suggestions of places to eat. These include images, to ensure you can't get lost! Your documents will be delivered to your hotel in the nights leading up to the trek, so you will be all set to go.
The trek between Magome and Tsumago is one of the most evocative with beautiful scenery, paddy fields and tiny historical villages. The walking distance is a little over 8km and we suggest that you allow about 3 hours for this part of the route. You'll finally arrive into Tsmago, one of our favourite postal towns in Japan, and here you will stay in a local Minshuku, a family run guest house.
Please note the local guest house will be selected nearer the time and information will be provided in your final documents.
