Cycling through the Villages to Chapagaon
The perfect combination of culture and scenery, your guide will lead you out of Kathmandu and along picturesque trails through some of the valley’s oldest Nepalese towns and villages.
After an early breakfast at your hotel, your cycling guide will meet you in the city and begin your journey. Winding through the narrow lanes of the city is an experience in itself, but you will soon find your way heading south to the historic town of Bungamati, where you can see the Machhindranath Temple, birthplace of the Red Machendranath, an important deity in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology.
Today, it is mainly used by farmers utilising its large courtyards for drying wheat and other grain. From here you will navigate a rocky downhill section through the village of Khokana before a combination of uphill paths and downhill freewheeling takes you to Chapagoan.
The village is famous for its Varja Varahi temple, an ancient tantric temple dating back to 1665. The temple itself has mainly been left to ruin, but this doesn’t stop pilgrims, often wedding parties descending on the many remaining carvings and statues to makes offerings for a successful marriage. After exploring the temple and village, your guide will lead you back down to Kathmandu and your hotel.
