Crane Information Centre
Descending on the Gangtey Valley every winter, the famed and revered black-necked crane is one of the region’s most famous residents and a visit to the Crane Information Centre offers a chance to spot these protected birds.
Displaying a wealth of knowledge, the information centre of the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) is a treasure trove of exhibits about the crane and its environment. Revered as a symbol of longevity, the arrival of the birds is celebrated by the annual ‘Black-necked Crane Festival’ in November. Try to spot the long-legged birds through the centre’s powerful telescopes and discover more about this endangered bird through a short documentary, ‘The Birds of Heaven’. An ecotourism initiative arranges mountain bike hire and hiking guides, should you wish to explore the region, and its feathered residents, further.
