Colourful Towns and Gorges: Coctaca to Hornocal
Visit vibrant and colourful towns, discover ancient rock paintings and enjoy stunning views on your journey from Tilcara to Cerro Hornocal.
Leaving from Tilcara, you will reach Humahuaca and cross the ‘Pena Blanca’, near to the eastern border of the gorge. Here you will begin the colourful towns and gorges adventure in Argentina’s North West!
After a few kilometers by road through the Coctaca valley, you will arrive at the first small towns. You’ll enjoy a walk in this valley this morning, before lunch in a quaint local town. This afternoon, you’ll hike for around 2.5 hours to be rewarded with the ancient rock paintings at Cerro Negro. From here, you’ll enjoy stunning views across the valley. Continuing on, you will travel by road through various towns such as Valiaso and Pucará, where you’ll also have the opportunity to climb the Serrania of Santa Barbara which takes you up to 4200m. You’ll finish up today at the viewpoint of Cerro Hornocal, with spectacular vies over the Abra de Zenta. After a traditional Andean tea, you’ll return to Tilcara.
