Climb Mount Sibayak
Hike up Mount Sibayak in northern Sumatra for spectacular views and to observe the volcano’s incredible geothermal activity.
Mount Sibayak, standing at 2212-metres, is one of Indonesia’s most accessible volcanoes. The volcano is situated above the hill-town of Berastagi with the ascent taking under two hours from the nearby road. The summit provides excellent views of Berastagi and the surrounding Sumatran countryside, including the neighbouring Mount Sinabung, a volcano that has been frequently erupting since 2010.
Mount Sibayak has not erupted since the 1880s, but the considerable geothermal activity on and around the volcano offers visitors a unique experience. Fumaroles near the crater lake emit hot gas and steam in loud bursts, creating an extremely eerie atmosphere. Take time to observe this bizarre environment and enjoy the wonderful views before beginning your descent.
