Classic Kyoto Tour
Zen Temples, lush palace gardens and engaging walks can all be found in Kyoto and refined this full-day tour takes in some of the finest examples in the city. With the help of your guide, you will discover the contemplative side to Japanese culture.
This morning, you will be met at your hotel by your specialist guide, who will assist you with the Kyoto transport network as you make your way north west to the Ryoanji Zen Temple. This is the home of Japans most famous rock garden, dating back to the 15th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The garden is considered a masterpiece of Japanese art and your guide will help you interpret its meanings, symbolism and history.
You will then travel east, to Kyoto’s Imperial Palace gardens. The Palace itself was formerly the residence of Japan’s Imperial Family before the capital was moved to Tokyo in 1868 but today you will focus on the surrounding Imperial Palace Park, or Kyoto Gyoen. Popular with anyone from joggers to botanists, the park blends landscaped areas with open, useable spaces which is something of a rarity in Japan and your guide will help you amble the boulevards admiring the fine collection of plant life in the heart of the city.
The day concludes with a stroll along The Philosopher’s Path. Running 2 kilometres along a canal between the areas of Ginkakuji to Nanzenji, the path gains its name from the philosopher Nishida Kitatro, whose commute to Kyoto university featured the route. The path itself dates back centuries, and passes by many Shinto temples and small shrines which your guide can help you discover.
Following the completion of the path, your guide will assist you in travelling back to your hotel in Kyoto where you can enjoy the remainder of your day.
