Bugisan Village by Ox Cart and Ijo Temple Sunset
Visit lesser-known temples and sample local village life and traditional activities on this day trip from Yogyakarta, finishing with spectacular sunset views from Ijo Temple.
The tour begins with a visit to Plaosan Temple, a 9th-Century complex in the village of Bugisan, consisting of several buildings, stupas and shrines. The site is one of the finest examples of Mahayana Buddhism in Java.
After, you will be invited into a traditional home for a welcome drink and light snacks before exploring the village by ox cart. The first stop is a local home-industry, where you can learn how traditional Javanese emping crackers are made. Next, head to the jamu-maker’s house to find out about the production of this herbal medicine, which can be found throughout Indonesia, with women selling it on the street in colourful bottles. At another house you can try your hand at playing gamelan music, a traditional Indonesian ensemble consisting mostly of percussion instruments.
Following the village tour, transfer by car to the ancient Ijo Temple, built during the Mataram Kingdom period around 1000-years ago. Located on the western slopes of Gumuk Ijo hill, this Hindu temple offers spectacular sunset views overlooking villages, rice paddies and temples.
