Visit Bahla Fort, one of the oldest and most dramatic forts in Oman, as well as designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort also has extensive battlements which run along the valley, and the nearby town is famous for its pottery.
It is estimated that Bahla Fort was built during the 13th century by the Banu Nabhan tribe who ruled the region from the 12th to 15th century. The fort is surrounded by a date palm oasis and the local town has a number of potteries and a souk where the items can be purchased. Bahla pottery is renowned for its craftsmanship throughout Oman, and most homes feature at least a piece or two.
Interestingly, Bahla is also regarded as the home of the djinn in Oman. Many locals speak of encounters with these elemental spirits, and National Geographic once named Bahla as one of the most haunted cities in the world.
Please note that whilst Bahla Fort has been extensively renovated, historic information at the site is quite limited.
