An Afternoon in Old Tokyo
Miraculously escaping damage in the Second World War, several downtown areas of Tokyo have preserved what life in the city used to be like. With your guide, this half day tour uncovers the magic of these hidden gems.
This afternoon, you will be met at your hotel by your guide who will accompany you to Yanaka using Tokyo’s public transport system. Yanaka represents what much of the late Edo-era Tokyo would have looked like, with many small streets, temples and shrines preserved in wonderful condition in between newer developments. Your guide will explain how day-to-day life at this time would have been, with visits to one of Tokyo’s oldest Bhuddist cemeteries as well as some traditional shops.
Your guide will then take you to Ueno Park, one of the best-loved in Tokyo for its fine cherry blossom season. The park originally formed part of the Kaneji Temple, which was one of the largest of the Edo-era. Fortunately the gardens survived, and your guide will take you on a stroll through the beautifully maintained grounds which also house the Shitamachi Museum.
Your last stop on this walk back to the past is Ameyoko-cho, a busy street market which winds beneath the railway lines beside Ueno Park. The market is considered the last of the former black markets left in Tokyo which is now home to fruits and spices as well as a thriving street food scene. Here, your guide will help you pick out a place to stop for a cold drink and a couple of yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) before assisting your return to your hotel.
