The Lalibela churches are understood to have been constructed by King Lalibela in the 12th Century and a visit to the churches will open up a fascinating history of the area. The churches are still in use today and prayers and services are still conducted in the churches daily. This means that a visit to Lalibela will not only give you an insight into the history of this area but also into modern life in Ethiopia.
The 11 monolithic churches can be visited in a full day, or at a more relaxed pace over two days. There are also a number of monasteries that have been built into the mountains surrounding Lalibela, inclusing the church of Asheton Maryam, which make for an interesting day trip from Lalibela, especially if you would like to be a but more active during your stay.
